Tecoaque is the reason Calpulalpan belongs on a travel map. The site preserves plazas, residential areas, cisterns, and a circular temple dedicated to Ehécatl-Quetzalcóatl, but its importance is also historical: during the conquest period, a Spanish-allied caravan was captured here, and excavations have found material evidence of those events.
The site is on Mexico Federal Highway 136, west of Calpulalpan. It is much smaller and quieter than Teotihuacan, but the story is unusually vivid, and the INAH site museum helps make sense of the archaeology.
