The Parroquia de San Mateo is Capulalpam's main architectural landmark, a 16th-century church from the Dominican mission period. Its carved wooden religious panels give the interior more interest than the simple mountain-village exterior suggests.
The church also has one of the best everyday views in town. Step outside and the slope of the Sierra Norte explains why Capulalpam feels so separate from the Oaxaca Valley.
