Lake Catemaco is the reason the town faces the way it does. The waterfront is lined with simple restaurants and boatmen offering lancha trips across the dark volcanic water.
The standard ride takes in small islands, lake birds, and views back to the green rim of Los Tuxtlas. It is touristy in places, but still the clearest way to understand Catemaco's landscape.
