Catazajá Lagoon System

Protected tropical wetland and manatee refuge on the water route north of Palenque.

The Catazajá Lagoon System is the only strong reason to put the town on a travel map. It is a tropical wetland of open water, channels and flooded vegetation, recognised for its wildlife and especially for its manatee habitat. Boat trips look for herons, ducks, iguanas, crocodiles, monkeys and, with luck, manatees.

This is not zoo-style wildlife watching, and sightings depend on water level, season and patience. The reward is the quiet scale of the lagoon itself: broad sky, warm air, fishermen moving across the water and birds working the edges.
