Nuestra Senora de la Luz de Tancoyol is the mission that reminds you how spread out the Sierra Gorda really is. It sits well outside Jalpan in Tancoyol, so reaching it takes planning, but the reward is one of the most distinctive facades on the mission route.
The church shares the Franciscan structure of the other missions, yet the details are local and surprising: saints, native motifs, animals, and vegetal forms packed into a mountain-village setting. Go by taxi or car, and do not assume you can find easy onward transport from the village.
