Tancama

Huastec archaeological site near Jalpan, with circular platforms and a quiet hill setting.

Tancama is a small Huastec archaeological site in the hills southeast of Jalpan. It will not overwhelm you with scale, but it has a strong sense of place: stone platforms, quiet slopes, and a reminder that the Sierra Gorda was inhabited long before the mission churches arrived.

The site works best for travellers who enjoy archaeology without crowds. Take water, arrange transport both ways, and pair it with Jalpan's museum so the ruins do not feel like isolated stones in the landscape.

A story
Tancama's rounded ritual platforms are unusual enough to stand out from many better-known Mesoamerican sites. They help mark the Sierra Gorda as a border region, where Huastec, central Mexican, and mountain cultures met.
