Convento de San Juan Bautista

Convento de San Juan Bautista is a 16th-century Dominican church and monastery in Tetela del Volcán, on the slopes below Popocatépetl. Founded in 1533, it belongs to the UNESCO-listed group of early monasteries built around the volcano by mendicant orders after the Spanish conquest.

The appeal is the scale and age of the complex: massive stone walls, flying buttresses, a restrained facade, and a cloister arranged around a quiet courtyard. Inside are colonial artworks and frescoes that mix European religious themes with local craft traditions.
