Cristo Rey

Hilltop statue above Pachuca with a mining vow behind it and broad city views.

Cristo Rey stands above Pachuca on Cerro de Santa Apolonia, surrounded by the old mining landscape that shaped the city. The statue and base reach 33 metres, and the terrace gives one of the clearest looks over Pachuca's valley, hillsides, stadium, churches, and busy roads.

It is an easy taxi ride or tourist-tram outing from the centre. The view is the main reason to go, but the mining story gives the place a local weight that keeps it from feeling like a generic hilltop monument.

A story
The monument is tied to a miners' promise. According to the local account, trapped miners from the Paricutín mine vowed to build a statue to Christ the King if they survived; decades later, the statue rose on Cerro de Santa Apolonia.
