San Pablito

Otomi village where families make pre-Hispanic amate bark paper by hand.

San Pablito is the craft anchor of Pahuatlán. The Otomi village is known across Mexico for amate, a bark paper made by softening tree bark and pounding it into sheets with stones. Families sell plain sheets, cutout ritual figures, and decorated pieces, and some workshops welcome visitors.

Come with time and buy directly if you can. The rhythmic pounding of bark is part of the village soundscape, and the craft makes much more sense when you see the work behind it.
