Casa de los Once Patios

The Casa de los Once Patios is a former convent complex turned craft centre, with workshops and shops opening onto a series of quiet courtyards. It is the best single stop in town for Michoacán lacquerware, textiles, copperwork, and carved wood.

Prices are higher than at roadside stalls, but the quality is generally better and you can often see artisans at work. Even if you buy nothing, the patios make a peaceful break from the busier plazas.

A story
The name promises eleven courtyards, but only part of the former Dominican convent survives in public use. The mismatch is useful: it reminds you that colonial buildings here have been adapted, subdivided, and reused rather than frozen as museum pieces.
