Progreso's pier is the town's defining sight, even if you mostly admire it from shore. It runs several kilometres into the Gulf so cargo and cruise ships can reach deep water, giving the beach a strange horizon of trucks, ships, and concrete.
You usually cannot stroll out along the working pier, but it still explains why this modest seaside town became Yucatán's main port.
