Xcambó is a small Maya site on the flat coastal road east of Progreso, tied historically to salt extraction rather than jungle empire-building. The ruins are low and open, with plazas, platforms, and pyramids sitting close to the marshy edge of the Gulf.
It is not a substitute for Uxmal or Chichén Itzá, but it has a quiet appeal. Come for the contrast: old stone, salt flats, waterbirds, and almost none of the drama that surrounds the Yucatán's famous ruins.
