Playa Patzcuaro

Playa Patzcuaro is a stretch of wild beach about 5 kilometres south of Sayulita, past a creek crossing that requires some navigation but rewards the effort with genuine solitude. The sand here is dark volcanic grey rather than golden, which gives it a different, more dramatic character than the main beaches near town.

The beach is undeveloped and largely unvisited by tourists, making it a strong choice for anyone wanting a few hours of genuine quiet. Local fishermen occasionally work the shore. The surf is heavier here than at Sayulita, so swimming conditions depend on the swell — check before you get in the water.

Getting there is easiest by mototaxi from Sayulita or by driving down the coast road and asking locally for the turnoff. The creek crossing at the access point can be tricky after heavy rain, so it's worth confirming conditions with your accommodation before making the trip.
