Volcán Tacaná rises on the Mexico-Guatemala border northeast of Tapachula. At more than 4,000 metres, it is a serious mountain rather than a casual lookout, with cloud forest, rough trails, and wide views over Chiapas and Guatemala when the weather allows.
Most travellers need a local guide and an early start, and the climb is best treated as a long excursion rather than a quick side trip. For hikers, though, Tacaná gives Tapachula a wild highland counterpoint to the heat of the city.
