Sierra de San Juan rises on the western edge of Tepic and gives the city its green backdrop. Trails climb from the outskirts into forested slopes, with views over the valley and the urban grid below.
Go early, take water, and ask locally about trail conditions before setting out. The hike is the best way to feel Tepic's geography: a state capital pressed between mountains, farms, and the road to the coast.
