The parish church on the central plaza is a quiet eighteenth-century stone building dedicated to Saint James. It was rebuilt several times after earthquakes and the long Cristero conflict, but the bell tower and the simple single-nave interior retain the character of a Purépecha village church. The plaza in front, shaded by a few large trees, is the social heart of the town.
Time a visit for the fiesta de Santiago in late July, when the village fills with processions, dancers in traditional costume, and the kind of small-town pyrotechnics that Mexico does better than anywhere else.
