Parroquia de Nuestra Señora del Carmen

Hilltop baroque church with ornate interiors above Tlalpujahua's centre.

The parish church of Nuestra Señora del Carmen dominates Tlalpujahua's centre from its hillside perch. Its exterior is handsome enough, but the surprise is inside, where painted ceilings, plasterwork, and altars give the building a richness that reflects the town's mining-era prosperity.

It is also a useful orientation point. From the church steps you can read the town's shape: steep streets, red roofs, and forested hills closing in around the old mining settlement.
