The parish church is the town's visual centre: a whitewashed colonial building facing Plaza Hidalgo, with two bell towers that do not quite match. Local tradition connects its dark-skinned image of the Virgin to the town's charcoal and mining past, when the figure was said to have been hidden away to keep it from leaving Villa del Carbón.
