The Ex Convento de San Agustin is the older, quieter counterpoint to Xilitla's surrealist fame. Its thick walls and crenellated outline speak to the early colonial frontier, when mission buildings in the mountains had to look defensive as well as religious.
It stands close to the plaza, so there is no reason to skip it. Go for the stonework and the sense of Xilitla before Edward James arrived.
