Las Pozas

Edward James's surrealist concrete garden, hidden in rainforest and pools above Xilitla.

Las Pozas is the reason Xilitla is on international itineraries. Edward James spent decades building concrete stairways, towers, arches, and impossible rooms into a rainforest ravine of pools and waterfalls.

It can be crowded and controlled compared with the old stories of wandering freely through the jungle, but the place is still extraordinary. The structures look unfinished and dreamlike by design, as if a palace had been abandoned halfway between architecture and vegetation.
