Telica Volcano

Telica is an active stratovolcano about 30 kilometres north of León, and it is one of the best places in Nicaragua to look directly into a glowing crater at night. Unlike the ash-slope experience at Cerro Negro, Telica requires a more serious hike — about two to three hours to the rim — but rewards you with views into the active crater and across the Pacific plain.

Night hikes are popular because the incandescence of the crater is far more visible after dark. The glow pulses and shifts, and occasional rumbles and gas clouds remind you that this is a living volcano. Tours from León typically leave in the late afternoon, reach the summit at dusk, and descend by headlamp. The guide is essential — the trail is unmarked in places and the crater edge is unstable.
