Nicaragua

Nicaragua is Central America’s largest country, with colonial cities, volcanoes, Pacific surf, and Caribbean reefs.

Nicaragua is the largest country in Central America, squeezed between Honduras to the north and Costa Rica to the south. It has more to offer than its modest profile suggests: colonial cities with crumbling grandeur, an island formed by two volcanoes, Pacific surf breaks, Caribbean reef diving, and cloud forest coffee country. Compared to its neighbors, it remains considerably cheaper and less visited — which is part of its appeal.

The country earned a reputation for volatility during the Sandinista revolution and the Contra war of the 1980s. That's long history now. What travelers encounter today is a country that's easy to move around in, where guesthouses are cheap, local food is good, and people are generally welcoming. That said, the political situation under President Ortega has grown more authoritarian since the 2018 crackdown on protests, and the US State Department maintains a Level 3 advisory (Reconsider Travel). Most tourist areas are safe for travelers exercising normal precautions, but avoid any involvement in political activities or organizations — the government treats these seriously.

Granada is the most visited city: a handsome colonial town on the shore of Lake Nicaragua with a lively traveler scene and good infrastructure. León is grittier, more politically charged, and home to one of Central America's finest cathedrals. Between the two cities, Laguna de Apoyo offers a crater lake for swimming. Isla Ometepe, formed by twin volcanic peaks rising from Lake Nicaragua, is the country's most dramatic landscape. On the Pacific coast, San Juan del Sur is the surf and party hub; quieter surf breaks stretch north along what's called the Emerald Coast. In the far east, the Corn Islands sit in the Caribbean with white sand beaches and diving that rewards the effort it takes to get there.

Managua, the capital, is sprawling and disorienting — most travelers pass through quickly and use it as a transport hub.
