El Coyotepe is a hilltop fortress just outside Masaya, built for defence and later remembered for darker uses as a prison and military site. The structure itself is stark, with underground spaces and thick walls that make the history feel close rather than decorative.
The views are a second reason to go. From the hill you can see across Masaya and toward the volcanic landscape that defines this part of Nicaragua, making the fort a useful stop before or after the market and Masaya Volcano.
