Jueves de Verbena

Thursday evening street festival with live marimba music, food stalls, and dancing in the city centre

Every Thursday evening, Masaya's central park and the streets around it come alive for the Jueves de Verbena — a weekly street festival that is one of the most genuine and local celebrations in Nicaragua. Unlike the folk shows staged for tour groups elsewhere, this one draws primarily Nicaraguans from the surrounding area: families with children, courting couples, older residents who have been coming for decades.

Live marimba bands play on the bandstand; other musicians set up informally around the park. Food stalls sell viguerón (cassava with chicharrón and cabbage salad), nacatamales, corn-based drinks (chicha, pinolillo), and grilled meats. The dancing spills out of the park into the streets and carries on past midnight.

Masaya has long been known as "the folklore capital of Nicaragua" for its preservation of traditional dances and music — the Verbena is the most accessible expression of this. If your itinerary allows only one Thursday night in Nicaragua, spend it in Masaya rather than Granada or Managua.
