Mercado Municipal

The small covered market a couple of blocks from the waterfront is where local families shop and where the cheapest, most authentic food in town is found. Half a dozen simple comedores — family-run lunch counters — serve rice and beans, grilled chicken, beef stew, and the local version of vigorón (yuca with pork skin and a cabbage salad) for a fraction of waterfront prices.

The market is liveliest in the morning. It sells fruit, vegetables, and basic provisions alongside the prepared food stalls. For travellers watching their budget, eating at the comedor counters here rather than the tourist-oriented restaurants saves money and produces a more interesting meal. Spanish is essential — very little English is spoken.
