Paseo Víctor Rojas

The Paseo Víctor Rojas, also known as El Fuerte or the Ladies' Promenade, is a 19th-century coastal promenade built over a rocky stretch of the north coast where the Río Grande de Arecibo meets the Atlantic. The walkway offers views over the river mouth and the rocky coastline, with the ocean on one side and the old city on the other.

The structure is on the National Register of Historic Places. It is worth a short visit for the coastal setting and the views — particularly at dusk when the light on the water is good. The surrounding area along the waterfront has a handful of local restaurants and cafes.

A story
The Paseo was built in 1881 by the Spanish colonial administration as a formal promenade for the city's elite — the "Ladies' Promenade" (Paseo de Damas). It was later renamed for Víctor Rojas, a local poet and intellectual. Its construction over the mouth of the Río Grande de Arecibo where it meets the sea made it an engineering feat for its time.
