Roberto Clemente Stadium

Roberto Clemente Stadium is the main sporting venue in Carolina, named for the city's most famous son. It hosts baseball and other sports events and serves as a reminder that Carolina's most significant contribution to world culture is arguably the legacy of one man: Roberto Clemente, the Pittsburgh Pirates right fielder who is considered among the finest baseball players of the 20th century and one of the most admired humanitarians in Latin American sports history.

The stadium is a working facility rather than a tourist sight, but Clemente's memory is woven into the fabric of the city. A visit to the statue outside and a walk through the surrounding neighbourhood gives a sense of the pride Carolina takes in its native son. The Roberto Clemente Sports City (Ciudad Deportiva) complex near Piñones, dedicated to youth sports programmes in his memory, is another dimension of that legacy.

A story
Roberto Clemente Walker was born in Carolina in 1934 and became one of the greatest baseball players in history. He died on New Year's Eve 1972, when the plane he had chartered to deliver relief supplies to earthquake victims in Nicaragua crashed into the ocean shortly after takeoff from San Juan. He was 38. Puerto Rico mourned him as a national hero, and Carolina — his hometown — carries his name on this stadium and throughout the city.
