La Pared

La Pared — "The Wall" — is the reason La Parguera is on the diving map. About five kilometres offshore the reef shelf ends abruptly, dropping more than 500 metres into the open Caribbean. The wall is covered in black coral, gorgonians and sponges, and the deep water brings turtles, eagle rays, reef sharks and the occasional pelagic past.

Dive operators in the village run two-tank trips out most mornings; the dive itself is intermediate or better, with strong currents possible. There are also shallower sites along the cay reefs that are fine for beginners and snorkellers. Visibility is typically best in winter and spring.

A story
La Pared sits on the edge of the Puerto Rican Trench, where the island shelf falls away into the deep Caribbean. The wall is part of the same coastal escarpment that runs east through Guánica and west to Cabo Rojo, and divers describe it as one of the longest near-shore drop-offs anywhere in the Caribbean.
