Station Hill Village

Station Hill is the only village on Mayreau, perched on a ridge above the island's south coast. It is home to virtually the entire population of around 300 people. The lanes between the brightly painted houses are steep and unpaved; goats wander freely, and there is no traffic because there are no cars.

The Catholic church at the top of the hill is the focal point of community life. From the churchyard, the view encompasses Salt Whistle Bay to the north and the Tobago Cays to the south — one of the better panoramas in the Grenadines and worth the ten-minute walk up from the ferry dock.

The village has a few small bars and one or two guesthouses. Electricity comes from a generator that shuts off at night. Supplies arrive by boat from Union Island, and prices reflect the cost of getting things here. Plan accordingly.

A story
The hilltop church of Our Lady of Mount Carmel was built by residents of Mayreau in the 1950s using materials carried up by hand from the beach. From its steps you can see both the Atlantic and the Caribbean simultaneously — a view that takes in two oceans at once.
