Birmingham Civil Rights Heritage Trail

A self-guided walking trail connecting twelve sites in Birmingham's Civil Rights District, marked with interpretive panels and bronze commemorative markers. The trail links the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute, Kelly Ingram Park, the 16th Street Baptist Church, the Carver Theatre (now the Alabama Jazz Hall of Fame), the Sixteenth Street Baptist Church, and several other locations significant to the 1955-1965 movement.

Download the free app or pick up a printed map at the Civil Rights Institute. The full trail covers about a mile and takes 90 minutes to two hours to walk thoroughly. It is the most structured way to understand the spatial relationships between the sites — how close together everything was, and how deliberately the movement used that geography.
