Highlands Bar and Grill on 11th Avenue South is the restaurant that put Birmingham on the national food map. Chef Frank Stitt pioneered a French-influenced approach to Southern cooking in the 1980s before farm-to-table was a concept, and the kitchen's consistency over four decades has been remarkable. The menu changes with the seasons but always foregrounds Alabama produce, Gulf seafood, and Southern techniques.
Reservations are essential. The room is comfortable and deliberately elegant without being stiff. Order whatever Gulf fish is on the menu and the desserts, which are consistently the best course. Stitt's other restaurant, Chez Fonfon, is next door and offers a more casual French bistro experience.
