Historic Bethel Baptist Church is one of Birmingham's crucial civil-rights sites, associated with the Rev. Fred Shuttlesworth and the Alabama Christian Movement for Human Rights. It was repeatedly attacked during the struggle against segregation, which makes the building's survival feel pointed rather than merely historic.
The church sits away from the better-known downtown civil-rights cluster, but it belongs in the same story. Visit with the Civil Rights Institute and 16th Street Baptist Church in mind, and Birmingham's geography of resistance becomes broader and more personal.
