Sloss Furnaces is the best place in Birmingham to understand the scale of the iron and steel industry that built the city. The two blast furnaces, ore bins, casting sheds, and maze of pipes and machinery have been left largely as they were when the plant shut down in 1971. Walking through is genuinely impressive — the structures are enormous and the industrial archaeology is dense.
The National Historic Landmark is now also an arts and events venue, hosting concerts and festivals on the grounds. A small museum inside explains how the furnaces worked and the labor history of the site, including the convict lease system that supplied much of the early workforce. It is free to visit and the outdoor grounds are always open. Weekend guided tours run when volunteers are available.
