Muscle Shoals Sound Studio

Legendary recording studio just across the river, used by the Rolling Stones, Aretha Franklin, and many more

Address 3614 Jackson Hwy, Sheffield, AL 35660

The Muscle Shoals Sound Studio, in a small white building on Jackson Highway in Sheffield (just across the Tennessee from Florence), is one of the most influential recording rooms in popular music history. From its founding in 1969 through the 1970s it hosted the Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, Aretha Franklin, Cher, Paul Simon, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Willie Nelson, and dozens more.

After decades of disuse the studio was bought and restored by Beats Electronics and re-opened in 2017 as a museum and working studio. The 30-minute tour walks you through the original control room, the mixing console, and the wooden vocal booth — much of it still original. Combine with the FAME Studios tour in Muscle Shoals for a full day of music pilgrimage.

A story
In four days in December 1969, the Rolling Stones recorded 'Brown Sugar', 'Wild Horses', and 'You Gotta Move' in this building. Keith Richards reportedly said the sound was so good he wanted to bring the studio home. The 'Swampers' — the white house band who played on hits for Aretha Franklin, Wilson Pickett, and Etta James — earned the studio its nickname Muscle Shoals Sound.
