Pope's Tavern Museum

1830s tavern and stagecoach stop, now Florence's local history museum

Address 203 Hermitage Drive, Florence, AL 35630

Pope's Tavern was built around 1830 as a stagecoach inn on the old Natchez Trace and is one of the oldest buildings in Florence. It served as a hospital during the Civil War — for both Union and Confederate wounded — and the original beams still bear bloodstains and bullet holes from the period.

The tavern is now the Pope's Tavern Museum, with a small permanent collection on Florence's early history: Native American artefacts, Civil War items, and 19th-century domestic interiors. Opening hours are limited (typically Tuesday to Saturday afternoons), and the staff are well-informed local historians.
