Wichahpi Commemorative Stone Wall

Hand-built unmortared stone wall north of Florence, memorialising Te-lah-nay and the Trail of Tears

The Wichahpi Commemorative Stone Wall, often called Tom's Wall, is one of the more personal memorials in northwest Alabama. Tom Hendrix built it by hand in honour of his great-great-grandmother Te-lah-nay, a Yuchi woman forced west during the removals and remembered for walking back toward the Tennessee River.

It is not a slick attraction: the power of the place is in the labour, the story, and the long, unmortared line of stone. The wall sits north of Florence near the Natchez Trace, so it works well as a reflective detour if you are exploring the river country and its Native American history.
