Alabama Music Hall of Fame

Address 617 US-72, Tuscumbia, Alabama 35674

The Alabama Music Hall of Fame honours more than 500 musicians, producers, and music industry figures with roots in Alabama. The collection spans every genre the state has contributed to American music — country, soul, rhythm and blues, gospel, rock, and opera — and the exhibits include instruments, memorabilia, costumes, and recording equipment.

The building sits on Highway 72 in Tuscumbia, a short drive from Ivy Green. For serious music fans visiting the Shoals area, this is the overview context before making the pilgrimage to FAME Studios and Muscle Shoals Sound Studio in nearby Muscle Shoals, where so much of the music documented here was actually recorded. Admission is modest; check current hours before visiting.

A story
The Shoals area produced an improbable concentration of hit music in the 1960s and 70s. Artists including Aretha Franklin, Wilson Pickett, the Rolling Stones, Lynyrd Skynyrd, and Paul Simon all recorded in Muscle Shoals studios just down the road — attracted by the sparse, funky sound of a small-town Alabama rhythm section that could outplay anyone in New York or Los Angeles.
