Pepe's North of the Border

Pepe's North of the Border bills itself as the world's northernmost Mexican restaurant — accurate, and the kind of distinction Barrow excels at. The food is straightforward Tex-Mex: enchiladas, fajitas, generous burritos, all done to a decent standard.

The dining room is busy and chaotic in the summer, full of tour groups and oil-industry workers, and quiet in winter. No alcohol. The walls are covered in clippings, photographs, and signed memorabilia from decades of visitors.

A story
Pepe's was opened in 1978 by Fran Tate, who became a minor American celebrity after appearing on the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson and describing the realities of running a Mexican restaurant in the Arctic. The restaurant has appeared in roughly every travel article ever written about Barrow.
