Getting Around

The town has a single grid of gravel streets and is small enough to walk in twenty minutes if the weather allows — which, for much of the year, it does not. A modest taxi system operates around the clock; rides anywhere in town are a flat low-single-digit dollar fare. For trips beyond the town limits — to Point Barrow, the gas plant, or the tundra — local guides run vans for a fixed rate.

There are no rental cars at the airport. The Wiley Post–Will Rogers Memorial Airport is a five-minute walk from the village centre. Walking around outside town carries a real polar bear risk; even villagers carry firearms when walking the spit toward Point Barrow.
