Blind River Rapids

Short boardwalk trail south of Petersburg to salmon rapids and Tongass wildlife habitat.

Blind River Rapids is an easy nature stop about 14 miles south of Petersburg on Mitkof Highway. A short, flat boardwalk leads through forest and muskeg to the river, where salmon runs draw eagles, deer, and sometimes larger wildlife in season.

The appeal is how little effort it takes. You can make it a quick roadside walk, but it is better if you slow down, listen for birds, and watch the water for fish moving upstream. Summer evenings are usually the most promising time for wildlife, while the salmon season gives the rapids their strongest sense of place.
