The Aleutian World War II National Historic Area preserves the remains of Fort Schwatka above Dutch Harbor, one of the wartime defenses built after the Japanese attack on the Aleutians. The visitor center gives the context, but the old gun emplacements and military ruins on Mount Ballyhoo are the reason to go. Access to the historic area requires a land-use permit, so check locally before setting out.
