Unalaska

Remote Aleutian port where Unangax̂ heritage, Russian Orthodoxy, WWII history, and Dutch Harbor meet.

Unalaska is a long way from casual tourism, which is exactly why it clears the bar. The city wraps around Unalaska and Amaknak islands in the Aleutians, with Dutch Harbor's industrial docks, treeless green slopes, hard weather, and one of Alaska's most layered small-town histories.

The best day here starts with the Museum of the Aleutians, then moves to the Church of the Holy Ascension for the Russian Orthodox thread. The Aleutian World War II Visitor Center adds the wartime bombing of Dutch Harbor and the forced removal of Alaska Native residents from the islands.

Unalaska is not easy, cheap, or predictable. Weather changes fast, much land is privately owned by the Ounalashka Corporation, and hiking needs local advice and permits where required. But if you are already in the Aleutians, staying inside with a book would be a waste.
