The Church of the Holy Ascension is one of Unalaska's defining landmarks, its onion domes standing above the bay in a landscape that otherwise feels raw and wind-scoured. The original Russian-built church dates to the 19th century, with later enlargement.
Inside is a remarkable collection of Orthodox icons, books, and religious art. It is also a reminder that Aleutian history is not just American frontier history, but a meeting of Unangax̂, Russian, and later U.S. worlds.
