Canyon de Chelly is the reason to come to Chinle, and it is extraordinary. The canyon system covers 84,000 acres of Navajo land, with vertical sandstone walls rising up to 300 metres above a canyon floor still farmed by Navajo families. The visitor centre near the canyon entrance is free and well worth visiting before you set out.
