Route 66 Electric Vehicle Museum

The Route 66 Electric Vehicle Museum occupies the Powerhouse building alongside the Route 66 Museum, and makes for a natural companion visit. The collection runs from the earliest electric vehicles of the late nineteenth century through to more recent models, making the case that the electric car is not a new idea at all — it was actually the dominant technology before the internal combustion engine took over after 1910.

The exhibits are thoughtfully laid out and the collection includes some genuinely rare pieces. The juxtaposition of cutting-edge sustainable transport with the gasoline culture of Route 66 makes for an unexpectedly thought-provoking afternoon.

A story
The museum claims to be the world's first dedicated solely to electric vehicles — which is ironic given its location in a Route 66 town built on the gasoline-powered road trip. The collection includes pre-1900 electric carriages, 1920s electric milk floats, and a 1912 Detroit Electric — a vehicle whose range on a single charge was comparable to many modern EVs.
