The old Route 66 road east of Oatman climbs through the Black Mountains on tight curves and steep grades. It was once one of the feared obstacles for early cross-country motorists, and even now it feels more like a mountain byway than a highway.
Sitgreaves Pass is the high point of the drive. Pullouts give views over bare desert ridges, and the road makes Oatman feel properly remote despite being a regular tourist stop.
