El Charro Café occupies a historic stone-fronted house on Court Avenue in the heart of downtown, near the Presidio. It has been run by the same family for four generations. The food is classic Sonoran — carne seca (sun-dried beef cooked back to tenderness), chimichangas, enchiladas suizas — with margaritas to match.

It is touristy at lunchtime but the food is still genuine. Carne seca is the dish to order; the house aged it for decades on the rooftop. The original location is downtown but there are now several around Tucson.

A story
El Charro is widely cited as the oldest continuously family-operated Mexican restaurant in the United States, opened by Monica Flin in 1922. Flin reportedly invented the chimichanga around 1922 when she accidentally dropped a burrito into a deep fryer and cursed (chiminga!) — softening the obscenity at the last second because there were nieces in the kitchen.
