The Shelter Cocktail Lounge

Address 4155 E. Grant Road, Tucson, AZ

The Shelter is a time capsule — a Cold War-era cocktail lounge on Grant Road that has resisted every redecoration impulse for over sixty years. Burnt-orange leather banquettes, lava lamps, fake fireplace, and a stiff, cheap martini at the bar.

The juke is heavy on Sinatra and the 1960s. The drinks are honest and the prices reasonable. It is a Tucson institution.

A story
Built in 1961 with bomb-shelter aesthetics during the height of Cold War nuclear fears, the Shelter has barely changed since. The orange-and-green vinyl booths, lava lamps, JFK portrait above the bar, and the door deliberately styled as a fallout-shelter entry are all original.
