Teatro Carmen

Address 380 S. Meyer Avenue, Tucson, AZ

Teatro Carmen, on Meyer Avenue in Barrio Viejo, is the surviving early-twentieth-century Spanish-language theatre of Tucson — a single-storey adobe with a slightly grander brick façade and decorative cornice. It was the cultural heart of the city's Mexican community when it opened in 1915.

The building has been restored several times but no longer functions as a theatre. It is best viewed from the outside while walking the barrio.

A story
Carmen Soto Vásquez built the theatre in 1915 to serve Tucson's Spanish-speaking population, which at the time was the majority of the city. The grand opening featured a touring Spanish opera company. Within a decade silent film and Anglo migration ended the Spanish-language touring circuit and the theatre closed; the building somehow survived.
