The University of Arizona Museum of Art occupies a low concrete building on the north side of campus and punches well above its weight for a small university museum. The European collection — the Samuel H. Kress bequest — includes the Renaissance Retablo of Ciudad Rodrigo, twenty-six panels by Fernando Gallego.

Twentieth-century American art forms the rest of the permanent collection: Jackson Pollock, Mark Rothko, Georgia O'Keeffe, and the recovered de Kooning. Free for students and under-18s; small fee for adults.

A story
In November 1985 two thieves walked into the museum and cut Willem de Kooning's 'Woman-Ochre' out of its frame, hiding it under one of their jackets. It vanished for 31 years until it was spotted on the wall of a private antiques shop in New Mexico in 2017. The painting has been restored and is back on display here.
